Dining in Lake Louise

Food is generally good in Banff, although you pay handsomely for what you get. The difference in price between a simply okay meal in a theme restaurant and a nice meal in a classy dining room can be quite small. Service is often indifferent, as many restaurant staff members have become used to waiting on the in-and-out-in-a-hurry tour-bus crowds. An abundance of eateries line Banff Avenue, and most hotels have at least one dining room. The following recommendations are just the beginning of what's available in a very concentrated area.

Inexpensive--If you're really on a budget, you'll probably get used to the deli case at Safeway, at Martin and Elk streets, as even inexpensive food is costly here. Other favorites for cheap and quick food include Evelyn's Coffee Bar, 201 Banff Ave. (tel. 403/762-0352), for great home-baked muffins and rolls. The Jump Start Coffee and Sandwich Place, 206 Buffalo St. (tel. 403/762-0332), offers sandwiches, soup, salads, pastries, and picnics to go. For all-day and all-night pizza, head to Aardvark Pizza, 304a Caribou St. (tel. 403/762-5500), open daily to 4am.
